This year my goal for 2010, is to recover from my bike accident of seven months ago. Until my extra weight comes off and my leg is back to 100%, I plan to ride apart from other riders. I would like to ride in some Randonneur events and receive my 5000 mile jacket at the National 24-Hour Challenge.

"On Wednesday nine riders snowed up in E Voctor for a very nice ride to Cheshire. Wayne had to move out fast since he had a job in the afternoon. After the start we never saw him again. In Cheshire we stopped at the store and the cookies were great; big and tasty. The ride back included a couple of nice hills to make sure climbing skills are being kept fresh. When we arrived back in E Victor Jim Wopperer was there. He had arrived late and ridden to Bloomfield but he left Bloomfield before we got there. Many of us went into the cafe and had a very nice lunch before heading home.

"Nine people (and eight bikes) met in Greece on a perfect Thursday morning, 23 September. Wayne P. rode to the start on his tandem, with Lily aboard. Our trip west (ride #337) to Sandy Creek was punctuated with a stop at Kelly's Apple Farm where a few of us indulged in extra calories. At the western extreme Sandy Creek was briefly examined, but no salmon were present quite yet - another couple of weeks perhaps. The wind was not strong during the ride, but it was more of a hinderance on the return heading east and south. The average pace turned out to be over 15, rather than the 13-14 mph advertised, but all managed to hang on.

Ride: 9-9-10- 57.4 miles - Day Ride #91 Lima Wayland- 57miles
Four hardy riders and one fair weather rider (ME) left Lima on a very cool, windy Thursday morning heading to Wayland seeking rain--and we found it! Wayne was full of encouragement telling us we were just getting used to late-autumn riding. We stopped in Wayland for coffee and hot chocolate and resumed the ride after one member of the group said, "We have to get going because I’m starting to shake. ” Fortunately, after about 30 minutes the wetness stopped and it was a great return home thanks to Brad's recommendation that we take Canadice Lake Road instead of Rt. 37 to say out of the wind. Soup at the American Hotel never tasted so good! --Whitey
Ride: 9-8-10- 88.9 miles- (3)- Day Ride # 357 Rohlin Along- 44miles, Afternoon Ride #23 (Reverse Rte) - 21miles and RBC #80 Mndn Pnds - Fisher 25miles
On Wednesday morning six of us got together at Parkway Plaza in Canandaigua for a great ride to Phelps. On the way to Phelps we had the wind in our favor and made really good time except for Wayne, who flatted about 2 miles into the ride. He told us to ride on and that he would catch up, and we did not doubt it. Once we got to Phelps we stopped at a nice little bakery for coffee and goodies. While in the bakery, Wayne must have cruised through Phelps and he did not see our bikes that were parked around a corner. The ride back to Canandaigua was on some nice rolling roads and the wind paid us back for the nice push to Phelps. We all made it back to Canandaigua in good shape and most of us went to Wegman’s for a sub and soda. All in all a really good Wednesday. --Bob L.
It was a cool, windy, but dry afternoon! I had three riders -- namely, me, myself and I -- waiting to about 3:35pm to see if anyone was late in arriving, but "nada." Before me, myself and I got any colder in the parking lot, I took off on the 21 mile ride. I was making pretty good time until it was time to walk my bike again on Pinnacle Road, where the bridge was still out. I was able to walk to the other side just fine. I made it back with time to spare (25mins) with a 16.3avg speed. Then, I patiently waited behind my truck, which blocked the chilly wind, wondering how many riders would show for the next 5:30pm ride!
My upcoming afternoon rides will start at 4:30pm after this Wednesday night ride -- weather permitting for a pleasant ride.
Ride: 9-7-10- 82.2 miles - Rode to Day Ride - #176 Longridge-Scottsville-Avon-Geneseo - 75miles
We had five riders starting out on a sunny but windy day. I asked how many miles they wanted to do: one picked the 33miler, and the other three wanted to decide after seeing how much time it took after doing the 53miles in Avon. After our little ice cream break in Scottsville, we took off with a head wind to Avon. We had an enjoyable time talking, and before we knew it, we were in Avon. The other three would have liked to do the whole 75miles, but had to leave at the 53mile cut for appointments. They told me to go on to Geneseo. With the wind and sun to their back and they were good riders. I felt assured they were okay and said will see them at the next ride. I took the RHT on a 3% hill most of the way to Geneseo. I thought of stopping for another ice cream break, but I had one in Scottsville and was looking forward to a nice tail wind all the way home. What a ride back! The wind and sun behind my back was a blast! Pole-Bridge Road was the best. I made a stop at McD’s and a 20-min visit with a friend in Avon; then headed down River Road wondering if the bridge was still being worked on over the thruway. Yes it was, as I made my LHT back to Scottville and all the normal back roads to the start. I was thinking of take a better road than Long Pond to the start, but that would have added many more miles. At this point, I was looking forward to getting home for some solid food after a nice 75 mile spin.
Ride: 9-6-10- 70.5 miles - RBC #362 Victor-Naples 73miles
Ride: 9-4-10- 49.5 miles - RBC #341 Ellison - Marion 50miles
Ride: 9-2-10- 75.6 miles - Rode to Day Ride- B&N #4 - 40miles and RBC Thur night ride- 25miles
The morning was already quite warm when four Day Riders met for the B&N Series Ride #4. The first 10 miles was primarily along the paved bicycle paths, and we welcomed the shady coolness provided by the canopy of trees lining the path. An additional 30-miles of road-riding took us on stretches of country roads where we commented on the changing colors of the landscape. Especially eye-catching were the maple trees that were wondrously beginning to transform themselves from green to crimson, and vast fields of goldenrod glimmering in the bright sunlight. With the heat of the day intensifying and nearing the end of the ride, we wholeheartedly agreed that a refreshing frozen custard at Abbott’s was needed by all! While spending a little more time together cooling down and relaxing, we all thanked Wayne for designing yet another unique and thoroughly enjoyable ride. --Barb
Ride: 9-1-10- 93.1 miles-(2)- Rode to Day Ride - Variation of #107- 32miles and RBC #23 Mendon - Rush 23miles
Ten hungry riders joined me on a very warm Wednesday morning to ride the rolling hills around Walworth, Penfield, and Ontario. The planned route was approximately 30 miles (a variation of Map #107). Two groups quickly formed and the main group ended up riding approximately 32 miles and averaged 15 mph. Iris offered a shorter route and she was joined by Tony and they enjoyed a slower-paced 24 mile route. Wonderful snacks and side dishes were added to the main course of grilled hotdogs, and all enjoyed a good time of relaxing conversation. Tammy, who unfortunately was not able to join us for the ride, was able to join Jim and the rest of us for the post-ride picnic. Brad and Wayne should also be commended for riding to the ride. As my school schedule will most likely interfere with any fall day rides, I wish to thank all my fellow riders for a wonderful summer of riding.
Ride: 8-31-10- 110.6 miles- (3) - Day Ride # 149 Mendon-Honeoye 44miles, Rode to #131 Salmon Creek Feeder 23miles and RBC Ride #97 Ogden Loops 28 miles
Once again, more heat at the start. We were four riders heading west with a head wind until we reached some roadwork that detoured us making us back track, where I led them to some other country roads, through Kodak to Buffalo Rd and back to the start. At that point, I needed a refuel of everything at Top's market for the 6pm ride.
Ride: 8-30-10- 53.2 miles - RBC Afternoon Ride #189 Perinton Peaks Tour -26miles and RBC #160 Sweets Corners Ride 13miles 2x = 26miles
Jules, Peter and I rode the Perinton Peaks Tour with the "cut." It was hot and humid at the start, but it wasn’t that bad when we got started along the big country roads covered with shady trees. We took a break in a nice air conditioned store before heading back for the 6pm ride.
Ride: 8-29-10- 63.3 miles - Rode to RBC #336 Three Parks West 33miles
Kelly is a very good cyclist. We had a great time for her first time on a tandem.
I'm looking forward riding with her again.
Ride: 8-27-10- 87.9 miles-(2)- Rode to Day Ride-#331 Spencerport Saunter- Ice Cream rid 32miles and #364 Greece Pnds 26 miles
The weather was just perfect for an ice cream ride. We had a great turnout with 16 riders divided into two groups, with Iris as a ride leader for one group for the 22 miles. My (Wayne) group added on an additional 12 miles to coincide with the arrival of Iris' group to Lugia's.
We timed it right on the nose! We had 32miles at 15.9 avg. Most riders had the "baby size" ice cream which is the size of a LG at most other places. You know that would be way too small for me, as I am a champion ice cream eater. Everyone exclaimed, "can you eat all that?" I look at them smiling and say, "no problem!" :)
Ride: 8-26-10- 95.1 miles-(2)- Rode to Day Ride Barnes & Noble Series #3 - 44miles and RBC Thur night ride- 30miles
We had eight riders just about ready to go, but one rider forgot his helmet. Barb had an old helmet available, but it was much too small for him. Tammy let him try her helmet which fit him, and she tried Barb's helmet which somehow did fit her, so they made the swap and all had helmets that fit just fine. After we all signed in, we headed out into a head wind but with the turns in the beginning and the trees sheltering, made it easier on us. The ride took us to Honeoye Falls where we stopped to enjoy cookies and drink at Enjoy Café. Then we headed North on rt 65 to Mendon Ponds and back on 65 to the bike trail. The roads were blocked off as we exited the trail. Apparently there was a fire at the airport. On the last mile before RIT, a bird of paradise pooped on Jim who didn't consider it lucky, but in good spirit cleaned it off and was fine. We rode 44miles at 14.3 mi average. Afterward the six of us enjoyed lunch -- the soup was great!
Tuesday Afternoon
We had six riders in the parking lot with four of us ready to ride. But there were two problems: one rider forgot shoes and the other a front wheel!!! The missing shoes person went home to get them and meet up with us later on the ride. The other person's ride (I can’t say any names) was rescued by the fact that I knew Lily wasn’t that far away and she was kind enough to loan her front wheel. The weather was nice and we rode 26miles at 15.6 avg. With a 20min break for the next ride with Pam, I was "lucky or unlucky" to started off with a flat right in the parking lot! Lol !

RBC #340 for the Thursday - 28miles
After participating in a couple of rides from this starting point, I knew there was the possibility of many variations. I started my first in a series a couple of weeks ago. This particular one took a group of seven riders out to the bike trail: to Pittsford, then south to Lehigh Station Rd, where we had some small hills in the middle of the ride. I had my tandem bike to help my friend Lily get her bike legs back after not riding for over a year. She did well considering it was her first 50 miles ever on a bike! Jim mentioned there was a great place called Read's for ice cream and recommended we stop there. You know I'm always ready for ice cream, plus I knew Lily could use a break. At Read's ice cream parlor we all had fresh home-made ice cream creations and enjoyed talking to the owner, who served us. After our break we headed for the last miles returning us to the starting point. Everyone graciously thanked me for a nice 32-mile ride which was at 14.2 avg.
Ride: 8-18-10- 39.5 miles - Rode out to Day Ride #4 Manitou Beach Ride 30miles
I did this ride a couple of weeks ago and the start wasn’t ideal, so I moved it to Wegman’s parking lot on Ridge Road West. That way we would have a safe starting point, plus it would be within walking distance for lunch. After registering, the seven of us headed out together on some freshly paved roads until we had to take a detour that added on a couple miles. We stopped to look out on the lake and comment on the big house there, before we started back. No problems encountered -- a nice 30 miles at 14.8 avg. Afterwards, six of us enjoyed lunch together at Wegmen.
Ride: 8-17-10- 41.1 miles - Day Rides #363 Black Creek Fowlerville 41miles
On our first ride of the week, ten riders started out from Black Creek Park heading for Fowlerville on a beautiful day. The panoramic views of the Genesee Valley along this route were magnificent. Not long into the ride, a half dozen riders in front were well separated from the contingent of 3 or 4 riding along at the designated pace. Wayne P. could not make the starting time, so he began about fifty minutes later, and caught the back group a bit past the half-way point just as Christine experienced her first on-road flat tire. After the tube was changed out, we rode along amiably enjoying the beauty of the countryside.

We were singing in the rain, until Jean had a flat! I helped her on the repair and we had to head back, that was her only tube.

On Wednesday afternoon three riders biked a scenic 23 miles around the Mendon Ponds area. We averaged 15 mph with about 40 minutes before the 6:00pm ride start. Guess we could have ridden a couple more miles!
Ride: 8-10-10- 117.2 miles-(2) - Rode out to Day Ride #124 Brighton to rt19- 49miles and RBC #371 Paul Road to Scottsville 26 miles
On Tuesday, nine Day Riders showed up for a nice spin from RIT to Route 19 then down Oatka Trail, one of my favorite roads. The weather was pleasant and with mild winds we averaged 14.8 mph. We stopped briefly on Oatka Trail to admire some amazing sculptures, and then refilled our water bottles at the convenience store in Caledonia. Towards the end of the ride we were all thinking “ice cream” and so enjoyed a little more time together in the coolness of Abbott’s at Park Pointe.

Ride: 7-26-10- 82.2 miles -(2) Rode to the Day Riders #340-Ellison-Lakeside-32miles and RBC #178-Ellison-Mendon Ponds-26miles
My first afternoon day ride was Ellison-Lakeside, 32miles. This was a spur of the moment ride which I would like to do more of to give my friend Lily a chance to ride on my tandem. I usually leave my house at 5:00pm for the 6:00pm RBC night rides. It’s a bad time to be on the roads. Everyone is in a mad rush to get home, on their cell phones and not paying attention and looking out for cyclists. I was almost hit four times this year! I started this ride at 2:00pm thinking we could eat something before the 6:00pm ride -- but who wants to eat and then head out to ride. The next afternoon ride I’ll move the time to 3:30pm and start it where the 6:00pm start would normally be that day. If I can't find a good ride for the area, I’ll make one up. That way, if we get a little behind for the next ride, we could head back. Perhaps we could ride the 6:00pm ride backwards.
Anyway, Brad and I had a nice ride. I found out later in the week that there were a couple of riders that could have been there. Hope to see you at the next mid-afternoon day ride.
Maybe you would like to ride along with Captain Wayne on the tandem. Just let me know!
Ride: 7-24-10- 411.0 miles - RBC Picnic and Challenge ride.
Firstly, I would like to give credit to all the people that help run this event, and to all the participants that rode for whatever kind of goal in the heat, wind and rain. Congratulations on the mileage you achieved -- no matter how many miles, you were out there doing your best! That is what it’s all about!
Now to my ride report: I’m not sure if anyone knew this, but my very first 24hr event was at this challenge ride 15 years ago. Many years had gone by where I couldn’t make this event due to wedding commitments. Now I was happy to be back, but had no memory of how the roads were. I had planned this event according to the weather and was to self-crew. My car was packed with all my gear, food and drinks for the long haul. Two weeks earlier, I had ridden my Merlin on the 1000k around the lake, and it performed like a dream considering the bad roads and the rain that fell for four hours. So it was my pick for the challenge ride!
I was up at 4:30am; the car was packed the night before. I had my breakfast, packed the cold items in the cooler and then I was on my way. Halfway there, I looked for my cell phone and realized I forgot it home. I didn’t have time to go back to get it, and since I rode over 30hrs mostly in Canada without a working cell, I felt I would be fine.
I was the first one in the parking lot at 6:00am and didn’t know at that point that I would be the last one to leave the next day. I was going to take my bike out as a couple of cars pulled in, but had to drive down the road because the restroom in the park was locked. Coming back there were about five more cars and riders getting ready. It was around 6:45am and riders were leaving. I looked up and said, "Hey, it’s not 7 o'clock yet!" They said it was okay to leave anytime. I wasn’t about to do that and chatted with some people in the parking lot until it was time to start.
I proceeded out and started the south loop clockwise and was enjoying the tail wind and was thinking about how the head wind was going to be on the way back, but I was surprised it wasn’t that bad! I was really enjoying this loop! I saw some riders on the other side and knew the long road on the other side wasn’t going to be much fun. Perhaps I should have tried one loop counter-clockwise? But I was making great time and felt pretty good.
After many hours, I asked Cindy how she liked the North loop. After signing in and devouring some watermelon, I went off on the North loop. Going that way; I didn’t see the detour signs and rode extra miles. Which was ok, but missing a turn and not thinking, I was going the wrong way! That was okay, after all, the miles count! However, I was drinking a lot the whole event and my two bottles were gone, and I was 8 miles from my car.
After filling my bottles, I was quickly back on the south loop and never came off it! At around 6:30pm, the rain was coming so I put my fenders and vest on, then headed out. I did see a couple of riders take cover. I was just over 200 miles and wanted to get in more before 7:00pm. After riding about 20mins, I had to seek cover for 10mins because the rain was coming down so hard at that point, I couldn’t see! When it slowed down, I went back out ASAP. When I got back to the starting point, more cars were gone.
Now it was time to test out the night loop conditions. I was planning to ride all night. Karen asked me if I was going to be ok alone all night. I said, yes -- I had everything in my truck.
She was going to give me a cell number, but with my cell home, that wasn’t going to serve any purpose. I told her I was mapping my own safe night loop and wanted to head out again to test it, because it was going to get dark soon. It was also time to change to dry clothing. With the roads still wet, the fenders stayed on longer. I liked this right hand turn mile loop. It did go over RR tracks two times. Soon it was time to put my lights on and take off the fenders as the roads were drying out. There were three riders out doing a couple of night loops and were heading home after. I did get the park paperwork to put in my car window, plus the bathroom was going to be open all night long, which was nice if I needed it.
Now it was totally dark and making my turn on rt 96, I encountered the head lights from a car,
I couldn’t see well from the glare, and 10ft in front of me a deer ran across the road. Maybe this was my omen to makeup a new night loop. I was thinking about it on the long road on the south loop to Manchester and back. After a couple out and backs, I knew this was my night loop.
It was safe--fast--no RR tracks-- was close to 90, and I didn’t think there would be that many deer crossing on me. Plus there were maybe three cars all night long!
Around 11:00pm, the full moon shone and stars were out twinkling on me most of the night.
It was a perfect night for riding! And, no wind!!! Soon it was time to plug in my I-pod and I knew it was ok to sing all night long. That was when I started to see every animal in the area. With my super bright light, which I love, I saw six raccoons trying to cross the road, a possum, about 50 cats and kittens and had to slow down for a skunk in the road!!! No deer or cows!
If there was a cow crossing the road, then it would be time to go home!
It was fun to ride a 24hr event without the typical stopping and waiting every loop. Nothing in my way all night long! Plus starting at 7:00am was easier than 8:00am. I knew when the sun came up, I would be almost done. Before starting my night riding, I wasn’t sure if 400miles was going to happen. I had a good first 12hrs of riding but didn’t know how the next 12hrs would play out. All we can do is ride them out. I was wide awake, doing well and kept riding a smooth ride all night -- also drank and ate well most of the night. I did get a little sleepy and took one of those 5hr energy shots -- I was surprised it worked!
Around 4:30am, I couldn’t see the stars anymore. I was starting to wonder, is it going to rain again! I was hoping it would hold out which it did! I loved it when the sun starts to come up. That's the sign, “I’m almost done! I took off my lights and continued riding seeing that I had the 400miles covered with no problem. I enjoyed the last couple of hours and was thinking about the Sunday ride down the road, but I was done for the day and was looking forward to heading on home.
At 6:40am, I came in from the loop with 411miles in and wasn’t going out for anymore!!! I was glad to stop! Right after packing my bike and changing, it started to rain. I was hoping it would stop for the Sunday rides -- I found out later that it did for them. I was out like a light when I got home. Everything stayed in the car until I got some sleep!
I was talking to some riders days after, and asked why there weren't that many riders. They said: the heat, rain, no hills, etc. On our club rides, there are tons of hilly rides every weekend, many Bath rides, but only one 24hr club event! More riders should participate to keep this going. I know it’s been slow for many years, and we all have some reason that prevents us from doing it. But if you do attempt it, why not try riding the entire 24hrs sometime? You'd be surprise what you can do -- you can take your breaks anytime you want in this event. If I’m not working, I’ll be there next year and hope to see more riders -- and maybe, some going for the long haul!

I like to say Thank You for the riders that came and the ones that wanted to come to my birthday ride. We had nine people looking forward to the new bike path on the parkway and seeing many sites along the way. After my 31miles, I rode home to get the cake and we had a nice time at the park. They did sing to me. Thanks everyone.

We had a great ride with Day Riders. We found a couple nice places to stop along the way.
I took some photos by an artist who sculpts artwork out of steel. We stopped for ice cream, too. Then we saw the rain coming in and tried to get my group back before the rain came...but we missed it by 15 minutes. Everyone was safe, however; we took cover alongside a big wall until the high winds and rain slowed down. Then Bob and I rode home. In spite of the rain, it was a great ride. I would love to do it again later in the year.

Six riders met at MPP to do the 44 mile ride to Honeoye and back. We faced a pretty consistent headwind coming from the south and were averaging only 14.2 mph when we pulled into the gas station next to Honeoye HS. Coming back was far different. It was a hot sticky day, but we were afforded a nice shady rest while Mark Robbins changed a flat. That gave Wayne time to whine a little bit about his quads and hands which still ached from his 650 mile stint around Lake Ontario. Now about that flat: word to the wise: Specialized brand tires have been a problem. This tire was brand new and the side wall was split open, just as had happened on the last Specialized tire Mark bought. After the tube change and tire boot, with no change in the wind direction, we rode the tailwind clocking between 28 and 33 mph on the rollers on Doran Road. Two words about that: WOO-HOO! We had a nice little snack in the park and talked about the ride, the wonders of the human body and Wayne's incredible stamina. Our ride average ended up at 15.8 mph. Again, thanks to Wayne for his pulls, despite his road-weary body. --Cindy F.

Yes, I was happy to make the right turn on Parker -- a nice pretty ride
to Dansville. At that point 19 miles into the ride, my drinks were fine
-- I decided to keep going. My I-pod was playing some good tempo songs
for the ride out of Dansville. I did pass a couple riders on Mack
School Road. I enjoyed Neils Creek Road. I refilled my bottles at a
little old store at the LHT in Avoca, then headed right back out. I was
considering an ice cream in Naple but I was riding such a good tempo I
bypassed it and was looking forward to an ice cream after the ride.
Pot and Eel roads were fun with their ups and downs but riding so close to
the big wind turbines along CR36 was a blast! The best down hill for
the day was Sliker Hill -- the road was like glass! After getting back
at 2:30pm, most of the cars were gone except for the last group of
riders who: missed the turn, took diet coke and pizza breaks, had
flying nuts, skipping derailleur and a flat! I had no problems other
than my I-pod ear plugs getting wet and having to wait over a hour for
them to dry out and be usable. Just a pleasant, smooth 100-mile joy
ride! :)

Friday turned out to be a perfect day for a ride to Canandaigua Lake and back. Eight riders did a revised version of Map #172, leaving from Powder Mills, picking up the route on West Bloomfield and riding it in reverse direction. That turned out to be a serendipitously excellent revision because all the hills were in the front half of the ride rather than in the second half of the ride. We got all the hard work done upfront! On the return Wayne pulled all of us back through a relentless head wind to Powder Mills where we had a lovely picnic lunch. We rode 53 miles,15.4 mph avg. --Cindy

Cindy had an absolutely beautiful day on Thursday for the Powder Puff route. “We again had 10 riders so I'm beginning to think that this may be my new lucky number! The 22 mile route took us only an hour and a half including stops and literally took our breaths away. It's a wonderful route - very hilly but not very long, so everyone pushed themselves without worrying too much about endurance. Eight of us returned to my home for conversation and ice cream while the other two peeled off on Garnsey to head to their homes. I'll be leading this ride again soon, so if you missed it you'll get another chance to join in! It's a great workout.”

We ended up averaging 15.7 mph on Monday's ride which had been posted at 14 - 15 mph avg. Future rides I lead will reflect a higher average speed in the description so that they more accurately describe the rides, which I hope will continue to stretch our capabilities on the bikes.

The day before the ride my phone rang. It was Cindy asking me to fill in for her as a ride leader. She had planned a good day and time. The weather started cool and sunny -- the forecast called for rain in the afternoon. We assembled at the start with eight riders: seven men and one woman. The lucky solo lady was Donna! We had a nice 33mile ride at 15.3avg with a pleasant east tailwind on the way back to the parking lot. No problems, just an enjoyable morning ride with great people!

Bob Lechner “rode out of Powder Mills Park in weather that was very nice with temps in the low 60's. The crosswind on most of the ride kept our average speed under 14 miles per hour. The rolling hills on the way out ensured that everyone warmed up by the time we stopped at the convenience store in Bloomfield. The ride back to Powder Mills was uneventful and everyone made it back ok. A few munchies after the ride with some good conversation and friendship completed the ride.

I called Cindy at 9:30am to let her know I was going to be late at the 10:30am start. I was one hour behind them and tried to make up the distance but they didn't stop at all. Plus the hills weren't that kind to my leg. I missed them by 30mins. I went home for a two hour nap and ice.
Cindy's Ride Report- Cindy led six Day Riders on the 42-mile Three Parks Tour in moderate winds on Wednesday. “It was a great ride - the sun was out and everyone took a turn pulling as well as riding last in the line. There were no stops of any consequence and some good hills. We all made it up Parrish Hill without incident and completed the ride in 2 hours 40 minutes, averaging 15.4 mph. Half of the group was rushing off to something else so we chatted for a few minutes in the parking lot and said our goodbyes.”

Our ride this past Friday had the best weather – cool start, a little wind, but warmed up nicely for a picnic gathering on a tail gate following the ride. There were 17 of us including two guests. We had a fairly non-eventful ride…no flats, no broken chains…just happy riders enjoying the beautiful spring day, the colorful landscape and the company of each other. We welcomed back Whitey and gave Jules an “atta boy” for maintaining his GQ status. Someone took a picture that should be posted! The food was plentiful and scrumptious – cheeses, French bread, fruits, nuts, chips – a little nutrition and a little naughty.
Ride: 4-29-10- 119.5 miles - Day Riders & Part of Mendon Ponds Ride.
Eleven riders enjoyed route #309 on Thursday with the alternate start in Powder Mills Park with Cindy leading out. “We took a little tour through the park, with a short section of it "off-road," then headed into the howling wind. Keeping together as we promise we will, we counted the full complement of eleven riding into MPP on Canfield Road, but noticed there were only ten riders crossing Rt. 65 on the other side of MPP. Wayne circled back into the park to find Steve who was having derailleur problems. Steve decided to finish on an alternate route and the rest of us continued on our original path. The wind made the ride tough with some gusts a little frightening as they came at our sides, nearly forcing us into the road. Worse yet, we seemed to be riding both the uphills and the downhills with the wind pushing into our faces, making the already fairly hilly ride more arduous. 35 miles after the start of the ride, having barely eked out a 13.9 mph average, we were ready to picnic. Well, most of us were, anyway. Wayne, who had helped usher riders in the rear of the pack throughout the ride had a flat at mile 34.5 of the ride! He came into Powder Mills Park with us and when he didn't show up in the parking lot we all assumed he'd gone ahead with his plan to ride all day. Well, ride all day he did, but not without walking 1/2 mile next to his bike. Please forgive us Wayne! We should have known better than to assume that you would leave without saying goodbye, and next time we will send a scout for you. I'm glad we saved a few scraps so you could have a snack before continuing on your 120 miles that day! It was a pleasurable ride.”
Ride: 4-28-10- 53.7 miles - Rode out to the Day Riders but missed them.
The forecast for Wednesday's ride wasn't too good but Jim's luck held and the weather turned out better than expected. “The sun was bright and stayed out the entire ride. The sky was blue and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. The temperature actually got up to 57 although it didn't feel like it with the brisk winds that were blowing at about 20 mph from the NNW and gusting to about 40. Six brave and hardy guys showed up to ride. The group wondered where the women were and also where Jules and Wayne were?? ( As it turned out, Wayne was up on Ridge Road, thinking it was Route 104, by a pizza place he thought was Rocco's!) The group hoisted their sails and went with the wind for the ride east to Stoney Lonesome. We hardly had to pedal on the way out but paid for it on the way back. There were times the gusts made it feel like we were going backwards. The group made one detour to avoid riding on Lake Road because they thought the wind would really be strong there. All things considered, it wasn't a bad ride. The group turned down ice cream at Hank's (I guess the boycott is still on until Barb gets back...or maybe it was just the wind chill!”

Ride: 4-23-10- 28.3 miles - Day Riders#167 Mendon Ponds - W. Rush
I wasn't feeling good - a cold!
Pamm commented on the chilly start to Friday’s (high 40's), “but 20 of us braved the cool start to enjoy a delightful 28 mile ride. The group was a little strung out at times, but everyone waited at intersections for people to catch up. This early in the season it takes a while for those winter legs to kick it up some of those hills. The scenery was magnificent - the countryside was in full spring splendor with flowering trees, daffodils, and tulips. What a wonderful area to live in and play in. Lots of folks stayed after for our tailgate held at a couple of picnic tables in the sun. It was a real spread and the men truly stepped up in the culinary department -- they produced two kinds of brownies and carrot cupcakes. Quite impressive! Cindy made delicious tuna fish salad to provide a nutritious base for the dessert course. Then there were other snacks from fruit to nuts. An enjoyable time was had by all. “

Ride: 4-20-10- 113.3 miles - Rode out to RBC Day Riders - map #212--(30miles) plus rode to Paul's ride in Victor. I did most of his ride before going home.
Jim chose a beautiful day for riding on Tuesday! “With the sun shining brightly, temps in the mid 60's and very little wind, 15 riders showed up to do the 30 mile ride from Mendon Ponds Park to Lima and back. At least one of the riders was playing hooky from work. The route had 1555 feet of vertical. The group rode at a 14.50 mph pace and did a good job of staying together and waiting for the leader a few times. The ride was very uneventful except for Jules' computer falling off and being retrieved by Wayne. The group decided to pass on stopping at the bakery in Honeoye Falls and instead had a mini tailgate party with home-made brownies and cold drinks. The weather was so nice that no one wanted to go home.” See the group photo before the ride (look at those happy faces!) and the tailgate afterwards.

Fifteen riders met at Schoen Place in Pittsford on Wednesday, April 14 for an impromptu ride. The weather turned out to be sunny with temps around 60 and there was very little wind. The group welcomed Pamm and Cindy to their first day rides this year (also Cindy's first ride since returning from sailing the Caribbean). The route went toward Powder Mill Park and then to Fishers and beyond. Cindy got to try out her new gearing on the hill on Probst/Railroad Mills. The route was modified twice based on input from the group to add on some extra miles. The group decided to pass on the option to ascend up to Woodcliffe but agreed to ride a few miles along the canal to get the ride up to 30 miles.

On Tuesday, the weather prediction for Wednesday was calling it the best day of the week with rain later in the day. I called Barb to cover details of the ride that Donna lead back in July. Everything was set to go. Wednesday morning started out fairly warm and windy with some dark skies. By the time I drove to the parking lot, it wasn’t looking too good. At the start of the ride we had four riders; we discussed what seemed best to do. The wind was coming out of the west about 15 mph and the skies south looked the best. We planned to start the ride with the map route but continuing the route closer to the cars. Working our way west to Brockport we had some sprinkles, but nothing that bad until we reached Brockport college. We pulled over for cover knowing it would pass pretty quickly with the winds. After 15 minutes, we were back on the bikes heading west along the canal road. At the turn, the bridge was out on Brockport Holly Rd. We talked it over and decided to go west for a bit, then head south away from the dark skies. About five more miles into the wind we turned south, then east -- we were flying with the tail wind. I was using my GPS to guide us to the Brockport area. I saw rt 31 just south -- I knew it had a nice shoulder all the way to rt 260, our starting point. We were moving along at a pretty good pace, but the skies were getting darker. At about 3miles from the start, a light rain commenced. We made the turn on rt260. I was crossing my fingers the heavy rains would hold off. When the start area came into view a mile down the road, I knew we would make it without getting drenched! I think the other three riders were happy to get in the 25miles and enjoy a great Reuben sandwich!!! We should attempt this whole ride again later in the year. Perhaps Donna will lead it for us; she did a great job the last time!

Email- On Friday, 18 riders cycled 33 miles under sunny skies in balmy record temperatures that reached 87 degrees! The group left from Penn-Fair Plaza in Penfield and rode with the wind up to Lake Ontario and then along Lake Road down to the bay outlet. The bridge had opened just the day before so we couldn't cross over the outlet. The ride was at a brisk pace and averaged about 14.5 mph, encountering some strong southerly headwinds on the return. After the ride about half the group had lunch at Don's Original but still resisted any frozen custard until Barb's return.

Email-The first Day Ride of 2010 saw 15 riders turn out on a beautiful day with sunny skies and temp's in the 70's. The route passed through the wine country of Penfield and headed northeast into downtown Ontario and then back through the farm country of Walworth and Penfield. At the conclusion, we enjoyed cold drinks, brownies and snacks. It was good to see Wayne back on his bike! Because we all missed Barb C, we decided to pass on the hot fudge sundaes from McDonald's until she can join in! (Awww, you guys are the best! bc)
